Custom Fabricated Stainless Steel Head Shield
At Harmony Metal Fabrication, we strive to be flexible in our metal manufacturing services, able to cost-effectively create small and large parts and products alike. This includes the ability to produce mission-critical safety devices, as we did for the nuclear power project highlighted here. The customer contracted us to create a large head shield for a nuclear reactor, capable of containing radiation adequately enough to protect repairs personnel.
The head shield was composed of 304 stainless steel which was manufactured with several high-accuracy cutting and fabrication procedures. These included sawing, shearing, plasma cutting, forming, rolling, welding, drilling, fitting, as well as supplemental insulation and assembly work. The equipment we used included a band saw, a press brake, plate rollers, a drill press, and our welding facility.
The final cap assembly was 14’ long and 4’ wide, with material 2” thick. Despite it weighing 4,500 lbs., we held tolerances throughout production at ±1/16.” Before shipping, we conducted a comprehensive final inspection of the head cap.
On a lead time of only 5 weeks, the customer received a complete safety solution for their nuclear reactor. Without our expertise and flexibility this project would not have been possible.
Harmony Metal Fabrication continues to welcome challenging projects like the one just discussed. Contact us today to see how your manufacturing needs can be satisfied by our unparalleled services.
